I just saw the documentary “Who Needs Sleep?” and I totally agree with your efforts. I also suffer from sleep deprivation due to health problems. I know what it’s like to try to function under the handicap of sleep debt. I don’t work in the film industry, but I love movies. I have all my life. I don’t think anyone should die so that I can have entertainment. I live in Illinois, but if there is any way I can help 12 on and 12 off, please let me know. I just watched this on the Doc channel and as an actor-director-producer I agree with the 12 on 12 off idea, and truly wonder why the unions are not in full support of this and requiring it of all productions. I have not joined any unions because I don’t see why the cost to join is so high yet they don’t stand up for their members when it comes to the length of the work day. The unions are the only ones that can force the studios into adopting the 12on/12off program, but it seems they are too concerned with lining the pockets of their leaders instead.

Just saw the doc, quite by accident. Went straight to the website to donate, even though the last feature film I worked on was over 12 years ago. I just couldn’t take the hours. I am still in IATSE, though, so I feel responsible for supporting you all. Thanks for doing this. You will save lives, families and marriages.

another major problem is the amount of crew members who have no problem doing the longer hours because they want to make the extra overtime there needs to be something done for those of us who don’t want want out lives to 100% revolve around work and be put in jeopardy

Just finished watching “Who Needs Sleep”. My son works in the TV industry, and he typically works 14 plus hours a day and has for 3 years. This documentary frightened me for him.

Great Doc. One line in your doc really hit home for me. i am currently seeking employment in the media market, and have been for almost 2 years. I would subject myself to long hours for the sake of having a job. Its scary to know that i will probably have to survive a job rather than enjoy it.

This is a problem that is also very prevelant in the Post production and CGI/VFX side of the industry. Schedules are always undersetimated, crews are always too small for the workload, and deadlines are always too short. I just finished working on the 2D-3D conversion of Clash of the Titans, and we had 2 days off in the final 2 months, with 14 hour days, 7 days a week for the last month to finish the show. The last week was 96 hours for me personally. This has to change, it’s no way to spend your life. The occasional long day is acceptable, but every project shouldn’t be an emergency.
